2008 / 90 minutes
The devastated fisheries of northern California are a microcosm of the planet’s larger problems. Once a major salmon producing region, in 2008 state and federal agencies agreed upon a complete closure of ocean and recreational fishing off the California coast. While much attention has turned to the crippled commercial fishing industry, this film examines the situation through the unique, little-known history of California’s north coast fly fishing community. From this rare perspective, this documentary provides a symbolic, melancholy reflection on a wild California that has been lost to the growing metropolis. Rivers of a Lost Coast follows California’s coastal fly fishing community through the rise and collapse of one of the world’s most magical fisheries. To some, this is a story about time and place, about a California that was. To others, it is a story about who we are, what we need and where we are going.

4:50pm ... The Man Who Planted Trees
1987 / 30 minutes
Elzeard Bouffier is a man of few words but great determination. With the greatest care he single-handedly plants and nurtures a forest, without interruption and in complete anonymity. Gradually a landscape that seemed condemned grows green again. Nobody realizes that this ‘miracle’ is the result of one man’s work. The breathtaking animation of Frederic Back combines with the rich language of French author Jean Giono to create a film of extraordinary beauty and hope. This acclaimed film is a parable for all ages and a triumphant testament to one man’s indomitable spirit.

5:35pm ... Climbing Redwood Giants
2009 / 45 minutes
As seen on the National Geographic Channel. Two explorers on extreme journeys: one transects 1,800 miles of Redwood territory on foot; the other climbs more than 350 feet by rope, studying hidden canopy ecosystems. They are giants–stretching more than 300 feet above the ground, with hidden gardens and mysterious predators thriving within their canopy. National Geographic reveals the unexplored environment of the California redwoods in an epic, year-long exploration. Obsessive redwood climber Steve Sillett of Humboldt State University investigates their monster crowns, tallying biological material and discovering new record-breaking trees, while escaping falling branches and crashing trees in the process. Down below, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Mike Fay charts the redwood range to size up the past and future of these primeval trees threatened in 21st century California.
